ine years on, I will never forget the experience Aga created for me during my portrait session with her in Kildare. She took me on a journey as she explored the environment, the light, and shadow.

As we chatted, she wove who I am into those surroundings to create a series of images that speaks volumes to me about that time in my life.

She has an innate ability to engage and capture a person’s story in a single frame. Aga showed me myself in a way I had never imagined.

y my childhood home at the break of dusk Aga Maru took these beautiful portraits of me. An invitation into the dark and I trusted her completely to find my light.

was fortunate enough to cross paths with Aga while I was living in NYC - a lucky meeting for a little Aussie residing half way across the globe! It was obviously meant to be for both of us and I can’t really quite explain the immediate comfort I felt when meeting her. She offered to take some portraits for me, so we met up in the middle of the night in Brooklyn and it was really freeing. I wasn’t really sure how the photos would turn out, as Aga had minimal gear with her - just her camera and the natural street lighting bouncing off the industrial buildings around us.

We just wandered around Brooklyn, snapping shots here and there - chatting and just getting to know each other. She’s such a beautiful person and I felt completely relaxed around her so things just happened organically. Not long after that night, she’d sent me all the photos in both colour and black and white and I was blown away by how the portraits turned out - they are raw, natural and very me. Not to mention, that we stayed connected from that day. Six years later, and I still love everything about these portraits - Aga is a real talent and such a great person. I’ll never forget this encounter!.

ga has already done your portrait before she actually clicks. Her knowledge of you, the contour or your face, the way you wear your hair. She knows. She also knows the light that is going to work the best, for her and for you. And she will work hard at making it work as close to her vision as possible, without forgetting to pay attention to the details that will flatter you. Her perseverance is bottomless and she will make you enjoy the process as she communicates with you, it’s not a one way thing.

You could just have met Aga, have this moment only with her and nothing else, and she would still have marked you forever. In a good way. I can only add that I love the way she has really seen me. It does good for the soul.
